With 1600 residents over 18 floors, he innovatively organised space to integrate private living, utilitarian & communal spaces into one.

Commissioned in 2007, the #Statue commemorates #SirJohnBetjeman's role in saving #StPancras railway station from demolition in the late 60s. British Rail announced plans to demolish the historic station which opened in 1868. The #Poet Betjeman led a campaign & wrote poetically to save the station from a “criminal folly”. Following a public outcry the plans were scrapped.

#StMaryLeStrand is the 2nd #Church in #StrandAldwych to be called by this name, the 1st situated only metres away. Mentioned in records dated 1222 ‘St Mary & the Innocents’ was destroyed in 1549 to make way for #SomersetHouse, forcing parishioners to #StClementDanes Church a short distance East. The united parish of #StMaryLeStrand with #StClementDanes still stands to this day.

Beneath the foundations of #StMaryLeStrand lie traces of #Roman #Saxon & #MedievalLondon when #StrandAldwych acted as a vital link between the city & the Royal / Monastic settlement of Westminster. In the later #MiddleAges & #Tudor times, the Strand was lined with lavish town houses of bishops & nobles, many of whom are remembered in the side road & alleys named after them.

Born 1826, he was 5'8/1.52m tall but often fought bigger men. Out of 16 fights he lost 1 to #NatLangham in 1853 & when he defeated #WilliamPerry in 1857 he was Heavyweight Champion of England.

1859, Heavyweight Champion of England #TomSayers accepts a challenge from US Champion #JohnCamelHeenan from New York, news of the 1st World Boxing Championship caught the public imagination on both sides of the Atlantic. The long & brutal bare-knuckle fight took place at dawn in a field at #Farnborough, & ended in chaos when spectators invaded the ring & a draw was declared.

A rebellion forced Ladislaus into exile & when he died, Matthias was proclaimed King in 1458, aged 14. After forming one of the first professional armies of #MedievalEurope he dominated Hungary & was elected King of Bohemia in 1469.

As King, Matthias waged war in Europe; he introduced an 85% tax that led to rebellion & with no successor, his conquests were lost within months of his death. The #WellingtonMonument is a statue of the #Greek Mythological Hero #Achilles erected in memorial to #ArthurWellesley, the 1st #DukeOfWellington & his victories in the Peninsular War & later stages of the Napoleonic Wars.
