Constructed from Beton-Brut / Raw #Concrete, cheap in post-war EU, the material-form characterised life after war: rough & unforgiving #BrutalistArchitecture

Go to the top & you’ll find #Flat130! In 1968 revered experimental architect #ErnoGoldfinger moved into #BalfronTower to experience life in the building he designed. Built for the working-class by the #GreaterLondonCouncil, its #Concrete #BrutalistArchitecture carried a social vision & to measure its success, Goldfinger hosted parties & crossed #Skywalks to live like a tenant.

Cast in #Concrete & #Grade2Listed, #BalfronTower has not changed in appearance, but everything is new inside. From 2014–17 the #SocialHousing council flats were redeveloped & sold as private homes, with polished floors & concierge service. Only #Flat130 is untouched, a nod to the visionary architect #ErnoGoldfinger. The form survives. The story changed. #BrutalistArchitecture

In 1979, the Victorian #NewhavenFort was scheduled as an #AncientMonument. #LtJohnCharlesArdagh used #Concrete formulas innovated by the #RoyalEngineers to achieve the first mass use of the material in a military structure. Readily available shingle from Newhaven beach was mixed with #Chalk burned to #Lime and transported on the #VictorianRailway from the nearby #BalcombePit.
