#ChristopherWren’s frustration at accommodating a pipe organ within his architectural plan for the new #StPaulsCathedral was evident in his description of it as ‘a confounded box of whistles’. #StMarysChurch in Horsham, accommodates a very special ‘box of whistles’ constructed by #HenryWillis, which incorporates his technical innovations shown at the #GreatExhibition of 1851.
‘Father’ #HenryWillis was the foremost organ builder of the Victorian era, renowned for the longevity, versatility, and tonal beauty of his instruments.
He built the organs of #StPaulsCathedral, #RoyalAlbertHall, #AlexandraPalace, and many major cathedrals. Throughout his long career, Willis personally supervised the construction and tonal finishing of his instruments.
When #QueenElizabethI went to #StPaulsCathedral to give thanks for defeating the #SpanishArmada in 1588 she waited at #TempleBar for the #LordMayorOfLondon to welcome her into the City. He offered her his #SwordOfState as a sign of fealty, the sword was carried at the head of the procession to show that the Monarch was under his protection; a tradition maintained ever since.

1670, taxes on coal entering #StuartLondon were used to fund the reconstruction of #StPaulsCathedral after its destruction in the #GreatFireOfLondon. #QueenAnne reinstated this tax to finance the construction of new churches, inc. #StMaryLeStrand. The tax on coal was rated at 3 shillings per chaldron & was as unfavourable as tax on bread. #HiddenHistory
