#1st in the world to run beneath a river, the #ThamesTunnel attracted an influx of curious pedestrians & small stall-holders when it opened in 1843. Connecting #Wapping to #Rotherhithe, it is now part of #LondonTransport’s overground. The tunnel is still used by trains & the nearby #BrunelMuseum give visitor tours to explore #Victorian engineering & discover #LostLondon.
#LtJohnCharlesArdagh’s #NewhavenFort is an exemplar of the #Victorian drive to both technologically innovate as well as design beautiful and powerful buildings. To span the unusually wide moat, Ardagh created (& patented) an #EquilibrumBridge & used Middle Eastern architectural design principles for the #Souq like #Casemates that flank the parade ground & ornate #JaliVents.
Built 1888, when people did not have a kitchen, shower, bath or hot water, the #OrmeauBaths gave community access to 36 public baths & 2 swimming pools. Designed by #RobertWatt this red brick #Victorian Bath House was used by kids, families & workers to play, wash & swim for 100 yrs. before structural cracks & modernisation forced its closure & sale in 1990. #Belfast#Heritage
