Commissioned in 2007, the #Statue commemorates #SirJohnBetjeman's role in saving #StPancras railway station from demolition in the late 60s. British Rail announced plans to demolish the historic station which opened in 1868. The #Poet Betjeman led a campaign & wrote poetically to save the station from a “criminal folly”. Following a public outcry the plans were scrapped.
The colossal #neoclassical#sculpture of the Roman Goddess #Libertas, holds a torch above her head, and a tablet with the inscription July 4, 1776, the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A broken shackle and chain lie at her feet, commemorating the abolition of slavery. After its dedication, the #statue became an icon of #freedom, #democracy and of the United States.
