#Kharkiv ’s S-shaped #SlovoHouse carries deep social & cultural scars. “Slovo” means word & the Architect #MykhailoDashkevych envisaged a #CulturalHub in the shape of the letter C, or S in Ukrainian, to house prominent Ukrainian writers. Built in the late 1920s when #Kharkhiv was a booming capital city, #SlovoHouse was meant to help intellectuals afford the high cost of living.

Plans to build #SlovoHouse were quickly approved by Soviet authorities who used #SocialHousing to put Ukrainian intellectuals in one house & monitor them. Residents faced #PoliticalRepression & most were shot in the 1930s #StalinistTerror ; 11 at #Sandarmokh . Registered an #ImmovableMonumentofUkraine in 2019, this symbol of resilience was hit by a #RussianMilitaryStrike in 2023.

In 2001, #UPA veterans established a memorial to #RomanShukhevych a Ukrainian #MilitaryLeader whose fight for independence ended in 1950, when his house was surrounded by Soviet Forces & he was killed in a firefight. To honor his heroic last stand & Ukraine’s fight for #Freedom , the #LvivHistoricalMuseum turned the house into a #Museum - hit by a #RussianMilitaryStrike in 2024

Pianist & civil engineering graduate from Lviv, General #RomanShukhevych was a #UkrainianNationalist who led #UkrainianInsurgentArmy partisan troops, Ukrainska Povstanska Armiya #UPA , in a guerrilla war against #Wehrmacht & resist #SovietUnion forces during & after #WW2 . Events leading up to his dramatic assassination are told in the Ukrainian film Neskorenyi #TheUndefeated

#Kharkiv ’s heart is a vast 12-hectare sq, renamed #FreedomSquare in 1991 when Ukraine gained Independence. Built in 1919 for a #NewPoliticalEra it symbolises Ukrainian national identity & resistance to soviet ideology - protests for sovereignty rallied here. Targeted during the 1st days of the war, its destruction by #RussianMilitaryStrike is symbolic - to shatter its spirit.

Its targeted destruction aims to cripple vital national, civic & public infrastructure.

Famed #UkrainianPoet #MykolaZerov was a gifted #LiteraryScholar #Critic #Translator & #Neoclassicist who defied #SovietRepression of #UkrainianCulture . Unjustly condemned in 1935 to serve 10 yrs at the #SolovkiPrisonCamp , he continued to write politics into his poetry & was executed in 1937. His legacy of scholarly work endures, & led to his #PosthumousRehabilitation in 1958.

For 30+ yrs they were secretly hidden behind false walls, by city architect #VasylBocharov & artist #ValentynKostiantynov , to save them from Soviet authority demolition. Rediscovered in 2008, these 1960s monumental mosaics exist in memory only #AllaHorskaMosaic

Daughter of the #SovietElite , she was an #Artist & #SovietDissident associated with the 1960s #UkrainianUnderground & #Sixtier movements, a generation who reawakened Ukrainian nationalism within the #SovietIntelligentsia . For this she was killed, aged 41. Her life: resistance in colour. Her death: #PoliticalAssassination
