“Slovo” House

#Kharkiv’s S-shaped #SlovoHouse carries deep social & cultural scars. “Slovo” means word & the Architect #MykhailoDashkevych envisaged a #CulturalHub in the shape of the letter C, or S in Ukrainian, to house prominent Ukrainian writers. Built in the late 1920s when #Kharkhiv was a booming capital city, #SlovoHouse was meant to help intellectuals afford the high cost of living.

Plans to build #SlovoHouse were quickly approved by Soviet authorities who used #SocialHousing to put Ukrainian intellectuals in one house & monitor them. Residents faced #PoliticalRepression & most were shot in the 1930s #StalinistTerror; 11 at #Sandarmokh. Registered an #ImmovableMonumentofUkraine in 2019, this symbol of resilience was hit by a #RussianMilitaryStrike in 2023.
