#Kharkiv’s S-shaped #SlovoHouse carries deep social & cultural scars. “Slovo” means word & the Architect #MykhailoDashkevych envisaged a #CulturalHub in the shape of the letter C, or S in Ukrainian, to house prominent Ukrainian writers. Built in the late 1920s when #Kharkhiv was a booming capital city, #SlovoHouse was meant to help intellectuals afford the high cost of living.
#Kharkiv’s heart is a vast 12-hectare sq, renamed #FreedomSquare in 1991 when Ukraine gained Independence. Built in 1919 for a #NewPoliticalEra it symbolises Ukrainian national identity & resistance to soviet ideology - protests for sovereignty rallied here. Targeted during the 1st days of the war, its destruction by #RussianMilitaryStrike is symbolic - to shatter its spirit.
