#Colonialism in #India created a western market for all things “exotic”. This painting is of the Auriol & Dashwood families in #Bengal surrounded by Indian servants & partaking of expensive #EastIndiaCompany exports such as silk & tobacco.
But larger pieces of #brocade were made in workshops in #SpitalfieldsMarket#London with silk imported from #India. Below is a gown in The Holburne’s archives possibly made from Spitalfields silk. Signs of alteration suggest that it was an #18CE Sacque-back dress re-cut to suit #1820s fashion because silk was expensive & re-used often.
The #Brighton Pavilion is a former #Royal seaside residence for George, Prince of Wales, who became Prince Regent in 1811, and King George IV in 1820. Built as a retreat in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in #India during the 19th Century, its appearance with its domes and minarets is a celebrated work of #Architecture by the Architect John Nash. #VisitBrighton
