#Saved is a #Play by #EdwardBond that premiered at the #RoyalCourtTheatre. Set in 60’s #London it’s a story of a frustrated generation growing up in cultural poverty on council estates. #LordChamberlain refused a #LegitimateDrama license unless censored & when performed, all were prosecuted. The legal case backfired & was pivotal to the abolition of #Theatre censorship #WestEnd
#LaurenceOlivier said in response to the censorship decision of the play “#Saved is not a #Play for children but it is for grown-ups, and the grown-ups of this country should have the courage to look at it.”
Distinctions between #LegitimateDrama & "illegitimate" #Theatre ended in 1968. Triggered by the #EdwardBond play #Saved performed at the #RoyalCourtTheatre who lent their licensed stage to another company so they could perform the #Play as Bond had written.
